After Finding a Seed Catalogue (after James Wright)

Poem a day #16 is a response to prompts from Write Better Poetry and NaPoWriMo: 1) Write a “form or anti-form” poem and 2) write a poem with an abstract, philosophical kind of statement closing out a poem that is otherwise intensely focused on physical, sensory details.

A vibrance to harvest
born out of dark soil

from colorful ancestors
diligent traits crafted

over the centuries
gardeners, farmers

patient, thoughtful
in selective breeding

to entice and dazzle
in the most rugged

adverse conditions
some stored in root

cellars, deep purple
skin and flesh bred

by the Hopi Nation
pink jewel toned kernels

brilliant green pigments
ancient Chinese heirloom

cherished for 600 years
back to the recycle bin

I have wasted my live
